Living in Thurrock

 A local information guide to Thurrock



STANFORD AREA

The Stanford Area is made up of Stanford Le Hope, Corringham, Fobbing, Horndon On The Hill and Linford. It is located less then 2 miles from Basildon and Thurrock General Hospital. It is serviced by the train station at Stanford Le Hope and lies on the A13 providing direct access to London, M25 and Southend On Sea. One of the main local industries is the nearby oil refinery at Shell Haven, and it soon will be home to the proposed DP World deep sea port, major business and logistics park.

Stanford Le Hope holds three of the most popular secondary schools in Thurrock, (Gable Hall, Hassenbrook & St Cleres) and many primary schools. Palmer's Sixth Form College covers Stanford Area, as does the Thurrock campus of the South Essex College of Further and Higher Education.

CHADWELL


Chadwell consists of the towns Chadwell St Mary and East Tilbury (Village). The train line runs through Chadwell St Mary but has a station at the nearby East Tilbury.

There are three primary schools serving the Chadwell area - Chadwell St Mary Primary, Herringham Primary and Woodside Primary, although Woodside is in an adjacent parish. The Gateway Academy (Secondary) is shared with Chadwell St Mary and Tilbury. Palmer's Sixth Form College covers Chadwell St Mary, as does the Thurrock campus of the South Essex College of Further and Higher Education, although they are just across the parish boundary in Little Thurrock.


TILBURY


Tilbury is serviced by the train station at Tilbury Town and The Tilbury Container Port at Tilbury Docks.

It holds historical importance with Tilbury Fort built in 1539 by Henry VIII and the Tilbury - Gravsend ferry dating back to 1571.

The Gateway Academy Secondary School is shared with Chadwell St Mary and Tilbury. There are also a collection of Primary Schools.


GRAYS

Grays in the largest town and borough within Thurrock with a population of approx 40,000. It is made up many smaller areas including Chafford Hundred, Orsett, North / South Stifford & West Thurrock. The area is serviced by train stations at Grays and Chafford Hundred aswell as having road links (A13 / M25).

Lakeside Shopping Centre in Chafford Hundred, in addition to the retail parks, forms one of the largest shopping areas in a single location within Europe, with almost 2,600,000 square feet (240,000 m2) of retail space on a site of 200 acres (0.81 km2).

Grays holds an number of Secondary & Primary schools aswell as Palmers Sixth Form College.


SOUTH OCKENDON


The area of South Ockendon is mainly made up of the town of the same name and the nearb. South Ockendon holds a train station along with fantastic links to the M25.

The Ockendon Academy (formally known as The Ockendon School, and before that Lennard's Secondary Modern School) has recently been cited for its GCSE results. The OFSTED inspection of 2008 described it as "outstanding" in the top 5% in the country. The school claims that its "amazing achievements being recognized ... is due to the hard work and dedication of all community partners including students, parents, staff and our wider community". Recently, Mrs Barbara King, Headteacher at the Ockendon School, won the award for Best Headteacher in the South-East of England.


PURFLEET AND AVELEY


Purfleet and Aveley are divided by the A13 and serviced by the Train Station in Purfleet and is the London side on the M25.

The area holds the the Belhus Woods Country Park and Ormiston Park Academy in Aveley along with several primary schools.
